TIME’s Josh Quittner has scored one the first, if not the first, first-hand peeks at Pixel Qi’s potentially game-changing display. The buzz around the company’s 3Qi screen has been building ever since Pixel Qi’s founding in late 2007 by Mary Lou Jepsen, the former CTO and first employee of the One Laptop per Child (XO computer).
The 3Qi screen is essentially a hybrid display that combines the best of E Ink and regular LCDs displays - that is the low-power, reader-friendly qualities of electronic ink display and the high-speed, full-color and video benefits of traditional LCDs.
Quittner referred to the color capability of the Pixel Qi screen as a “killer app” and says a YouTube video delivered at 60 frames per second in reflective mode ran “perfectly smoothly.” Read more of Quittner’s rave review at TIME.com.
Jepsen revealed the first pictures of the 3Qi screen on her Pixel Qi blog a few days ago and said these screens (10.1″ diagonal) will be available this fall in netbooks and ebook readers.
The 3Qi screen just may give device manufacturers the ability to deliver a legitimate competitor to Apple’s long-rumored, large-screen mediapad.
